2.SAN FRANCISCO-Only 21percent of workers worldwide are"engaged"-that's the word used to describe workers who are ready to expend some extra effort at work-while 38percent are disengaged,according toa new survey.
"Engagement is not satisfaction or happiness,but the degree to which workers connect to the company emotionally,and the degree to which workers are aware of what they need to do to add value and are willing to take that action,"said Julie Gebauer,a managing director of Towers Perrin,a  consulting firm,which surveyed almost 90,000workers in 19countries.
"Happy employees don't necessarily create better financial results, but there is a  definite link between engagement and a company's financial performance,"Gebauer said.
The survey found 21percent of workers worldwide are engaged,and another 41percent are"enrolled",which means they're on the road to engagement.
More than 80percent of the engaged employees say they contribute to the quality of company products,services and customer satisfaction,while only 40percent of disengaged workers agree.
Engagement helps retention(留置)too.About 50percent of engaged employees say they have no plans to leave their company versus 15percent of the disengaged.
"The fact that almost 80percent of workers are disengaged is likely costing   companies money."Gebauer said.
"The conception of engagement is really a financial issue,"said Gebauer.‘Organizations that have employees that are highly engaged deliver better financial results than those that don't."
In a separate study,Towers Perrin assessed data on 40global companies over a three-year period,measuring employee engagement at a certain point and then looking at the companies'financial results over the following three years.
Companies with highly motivated workers enjoyed a 3.7percent increase in profits,while companies with a lower level of worker commitment saw a decrease in profits slightly.
What makes for an engaged employee?It's not necessarily pay.While the level of pay is important,it's not among the top 10drivers of engagement.Rather than only using the pay,companies should survey their work force,much as they might study their customers,to assess what employees are seeking.
25.The underlined word"ienrolled"in Paragraph 4meansD.
A.engaged
B.disengaged
C.over-engaged
D.not yet but to be engaged
26.According to the text,among 500disengaged employees,how many would probably have the intention of leaving their company?D
A.50.
B.75.
C.250.
D.425.
27.What would probably be talked about following the last paragraph?A
A.The top ten drivers of engagement.
B.The reason to encourage engagement.
C.The importance of the pay level in engagement.
D.The survey of work force in a company. 试题答案

分析 本文为说明文,文章提出只有21%的雇员积极参与公司,38%的员工还未参与.同时讨论了员工工作的动力.

解答 25-27.DDA
25.答案D.词义猜测题.根据后文which means they're on the road to engagement可知,此处指的是这些人正在参与的路上,在参与但还未进入状态.故选D.
26.答案D.数字计算题.根据第五段About 50percent of engaged employees say they have no plans to leave their company versus 15percent of the disengaged可知,在无参与的员工中只有15%的不打算离开公司,故打算离开公司的人数为5,000*(1-15%)=425,故选D.
27.答案A.推理判断题.根据What makes for an engaged employee? It's not necessarily pay. While the level of pay is important,it's not among the top 10drivers of engagement可知,薪水固然重要,但并未跻身十大工作动力之列.故下文要介绍工作的十大动力.选A.

If you’ve ever owned a chimney, you know that it can get pretty dirty. There’s a whole lot of soot(烟灰) that gets stuck on the inside. That stuff has to get cleaned, or you could have a serious fire risk. While nowadays we have easier ways of doing this dirty job, in the way back days somebody used to climb up the chimney and clean all that soot. And the thing is, not just anybody could do it.

You had to be really small to fit up in the chimney, so they used to give the task to kids – some as young as four or five years old. They worked for their boss known as a master-sweep. They were often covered in soot, and were very likely to get burned. They often developed what became known as soot wart, a form of cancer.

Are your unfairness bells ringing? William Blake’s certainly were. The physical dangers and widespread unfairness of the chimney-sweeping job really stuck in his throat, so much so that he wrote not one, but two poems called “The Chimney Sweeper”.

The first poem (the one we’re discussing here)was published in 1789 in a book called Songs of Innocence. These little poems took children and the joys of childhood innocence as their subject. As you’ve probably guessed by now, many of the poems in Songs of Innocence, like “The Chimney Sweeper”, are about the ways in which childhood innocence is destroyed by unkind old adults. For Blake, innocence is, in many ways, a total joke. It doesn’t exist, because it’s always taken away by the realistic world – chimney-sweeping, death, poverty, etc.

What does a five-year-old chimney sweeper in 18th-century England have to do with you? More than you might think. It is reported that 150 million kids are in child labor in developing countries. Many of them work long hours and face dangerous health risks. Like Blake’s chimney sweeper, these kids are not even given a chance at innocence because experience keeps getting in the way.
